Description
For Auction: Outstanding Contact era Effigy face pipe! Purchased from a Connecticut antique dealer. Appears to have been part of a New England estate. No additional information available. Pipe bowl is completely hand crafted. Stem is a rolled style and is tightly inserted into bowl. Point of interest, the stem was mended in earlier times and has a silver patch about 1” near the center. Please see pics. Pipe bowl measures approx 1” X 1”3/4. Pipe stem measures approx 5”5/16 from mouth piece to point of insertion at bowl. Relic also has a suspension chain for charms that measures 8”1/4. And appears to be made of brass. The pipe bowl appears to be copper or brass,as does the stem. The suspension chain has two danglers attached. An elk tooth and measures approx 1”3/4. Also attached is a bone pick or totem measuring approx 2”1/4. The suspension chain was secured at two junctures on bottom of the the pipe bowl. In messing around with the piece the old coil snapped and can easily be twisted back securely with a needle nose pliers. The interior of the bowl exhibits use wear, please see pics. I found at least one example of a similar trade pipe with a suspension chain attached the same as this pipe. Now about the bowl and image itself. The art certainty appears to be depicting an Algonquian individual. The ears of the piece are pierced and although one is missing the other ear has a spiral Basque earring so popular with the Susquehannocks and Iroquois People’s. The pipe is in overall fine condition. Please contact us with any questions and or inquiries. Fine and rare artifact!!
