    #   I Just heard from a friend of mine who is a Harvard Trained  Anthropologist (Doctorate) & that this is a RARE Artifact and NOT to give it away - So I WON'T #
    This auction is for a Very Rare 1700's (or Earlier) Hand Carved Sandstone "FALSE FACE" Artifact in Solid Original Condition Originally from here in Central New York State and an Iroquois Family and from the Iroquois Onondaga Nation made from Northern Mohawk region Indigenous Sandstone Deposits.  It has been in this family for nearly 170 years so I know it is Authentic
    *** False Face Artifacts from this time period are Extremely Rare and one Carved in Stone is Rare! ***
    This False Face Artifact measures 7" tall x 6 3/4" wide and 4" deep and weighs a solid 7.5 lbs.  Note the Wild Bulging Eyes and Gnarled Teeth that are Displayed to Scare off Evil Spirits and Damaging Winds.
    Iroquois False Faces would go through the Smoke Ceremony performed by the Village Shaman to imbue it with Power from the Spirit World then would be used in various ceremonies by Members of the "False Face Society" to Cure Illnesses, Protect from Evil Spirits and even Protect the Village from Damaging Winds and Foul Weather Occurrences such as Bad Storms.  Usually False Faces were Carved into Wood or made into Masks but this is an Extremely RARE Stone Carved False Face that would also have been used in the Various Ceremonies.
    The Europeans First Witnessed The Use of False Faces back the the late 1600's but it apparently dates back to the 1400's or Earlier.
